Quick Reference

(Milizia Volontaria per la Sicurezza Nazionale, Voluntary Militia for National Security) (Italy)

Created in January 1923 to establish a militia answerable to Mussolini alone, it initially consisted mainly of former Blackshirt recruits. The bulk of the MVSN consisted of unpaid volunteers (over 90 per cent of the 750,000-strong force), who welcomed it as a social organization providing state benefits such as free medical care in return for their commitment to the Fascist movement. In addition, there was a special militia whose members worked in various government departments (railways, ports, telegraphs, etc.), whose purpose was to ensure the allegiance of their departments to the state.SA; SS
