(Verdi: Luisa Miller). Sop. Daughter of Miller, she is in love with the young peasant ‘Carlo’, not realizing he is Rodolfo, the son of her father's old enemy Count Walter. She is forced by the steward Wurm to write a letter denying her feelings for Rodolfo. When Rodolfo sees it, he accuses her of betrayal and gives her poison to drink—he also drinks it himself. Learning the truth, he manages to kill Wurm before he and Luisa die together. Created (1849) by Marietta Gazzaniga.
