(1931–1994) Samuel O. Miller was a social work educator, scholar, and practitioner. Born in Panama, he earned a BA (cum laude) in sociology and education from Dakota Wesleyan University, an MSW (with honors) in casework from Boston University, and a PhD in social work practice from the University of Chicago School of Social Service Administration. From 1970 through 1973 he was an associate professor at the Western Michigan University School of Social Work. From 1973 until his death Miller was a faculty member at the Columbia University School of Social Work (associate professor, 1973–1989; professor, 1989–1994). Miller's teaching and scholarly contributions were complemented by an active private social work practice.
