Quick Reference

The American medical geneticist Victor McKusick (1921–2008) conceived the McKusick classification and assigned a five-digit number to each condition he described in his landmark monograph Mendelian Inheritance in Man (MIM); these numbers, in fields with blank spaces to allow for new discoveries in Mendelian genetics, have been adopted by clinical geneticists worldwide as the numerical taxonomic system for inherited disorders.

Subjects: Public Health and Epidemiology.
