Quick Reference

A nonprotein amino acid similar to tyrosine, first isolated from Mimosa pudica and found in tropical legumes of the genus Leucaena. It is toxic to animals and potently inhibits DNA replication in mammalian cells by blocking the formation of replication forks. It is an iron/zinc chelator and may inhibit iron-dependent ribonucleotide reductase and the zinc-sensitive transcription of the cytoplasmic serine hydroxymethyltransferase gene (SHMT).
