The ability to attribute mental states to oneself and to other individuals and thereby to be able to predict the behaviour of others. There are standard tests to detect this ability in human infants. Research into the cognitive abilities of non-humans has centred mainly on monkeys and chimpanzees; it is not yet clear whether non-human primates possess a theory of mind.
