The lowest rate of remuneration that an employer may legally pay. The minimum adult hourly rate (from October 2008) is £5.73. The youth rate for 18–21-year-olds is £4.77 per hour, and for 16–17 year olds £3.53. Special rules apply to apprentices. Non-compliance by employers may be remedied by civil or criminal sanctions.
