Ascension. Typically used to refer to Muhammad's Night Journey to heaven, which is a common theme in Sufi poetry and popular piety. Also used by Sufis to discuss their own progress along the path of spiritual ascension, which is typically modeled on Muhammad's miraj, organizing heaven into stages that correspond to emotional levels of the journey toward perfection in God. The traditional site of Muhammad's ascension in Jerusalem became a popular place for Muslim worship in the tenth and eleventh centuries.
