Tracing shapes such as stars and circles with a pencil while the writing hand and the shapes are screened from sight but can be viewed via a reflection in a mirror. The discovery in 1960 that the ability to learn such automatic skilled movements is not impaired by bilateral temporal lobe lesions, whereas memories requiring conscious cognitive processes are abolished by such lesions, gave the first hint of the existence of two distinct types of learning systems involving declarative knowledge and non-declarative knowledge.
