A series of Japanese testbed satellites to develop technology for future missions. The first Mission Demonstration Test Satellite (MDS), also known as Tsubasa, was launched on 4 February 2002 into a highly elliptical orbit (a geostationary transfer orbit) which took it through the Earth's Van Allen radiation belts. During its 20-month flight it gathered data on radiation in space for the development of radiation-resistant components.
