The liturgical head-dress and part of the insignia of a bishop. In the E. Church it takes the form of a crown, decorated with medallions in enamel or embroidery. In the W. Church it is shield-shaped, usually of embroidered satin and often jewelled; two fringed lappets hang down at the back.
