The name in Hebrew denotes a look‐out point, and there are five such places mentioned in the OT, of which the best known is that on the border between Israel and Judah (1 Kgs. 15: 22). After the capture of Jerusalem by the Babylonians in 586 bce, Mizpah was established as the capital of the province and Gedaliah installed as governor until he was assassinated (2 Kgs. 25: 25).
