Quick Reference

A noun used by the Vedic Āryans, and in subsequent Brahmanical discourse, to designate foreigners (i.e. anāryans). By definition, they speak languages other than Sanskrit, but, more widely, they are beyond the pale insofar as they have no access to Vedic dharma, and originate outside the Āryan homelands. Muslims, Christians, and other perceived outsiders, may find themselves placed in this category. They are also considered ritually impure.

Subjects: Hinduism.
