A method (multilocus sequence typing) for characterizing isolates of bacteria or other organisms using nucleotide sequences of fragments derived from several (usually seven) housekeeping genes. Alleles at each locus are defined by nucleotide sequencing, rather than indirectly from the electrophoretic mobility of their gene products.
