The great black dog of Manx tradition, sometimes thought to inhabit the halls of Peel Castle on the west coast of the island. Two descriptions have him (a) as big as a calf with eyes as large as pewter plates, or (b) as a large, dark spaniel with curled, shaggy hair. A local variant of his name is mauthe doog. Cited in Sir Walter Scott's novel Peveril of the Peak (1822).
