Quick Reference

The process of ensuring that standards of assessment are consistent between assessors in the same institution (internal moderation) or between institutions nationally (external moderation). This work is carried out by moderators. It is distinct from second marking in that it usually involves the scrutiny of samples of assessed work across a range of marks to ensure reliability of assessment, and provides feedback to the assessor(s) rather than to the learner. Neither should it be confused with verification, which is concerned with monitoring assessment procedures rather than assessment decisions.
