One of Britain's leading product designers and innovators in the later 20th century, Moggridge was a co‐founder of IDEO, one of the foremost design consultancies in the world, Offering expertise in the fields of user‐centred products, services, and environments the company has about 350 employees located in eleven offices around the world and drawn from across a wide range of specialisms: industrial design, ergonomics, mechanical and electrical engineers, interaction design, and model making. IDEO is associated with innovative, technologically sophisticated, and elegant design. Moggridge graduated from the Central School of Art and Design in London (see Central School of Arts and Crafts) in 1966 before working as a designer in the United States for three years. On his return to Britain he established his own consultancy, Moggridge Associates, in London in 1969 with a focus on product design and development. Business expanded during the 1970s leading to the opening of a second office in San Francisco in 1979. Amongst his well‐known designs in this period of his career were the first laptop computer for Grid (1982) and a computer mouse for Microsoft (1988), and he was increasingly concerned with user interface—or interactive—design. In 1991 he joined with David Kelley and Mike Nuttall to form IDEO, the company establishing a worldwide reputation for the strategic use of design in innovation. IDEO Tokyo was established in 1994. Moggridge has played an important role in the dissemination of good practice in professional design and has been involved in education. He was made a Senior Fellow at the Royal College of Art (RCA) in 1992 and an Honorary Fellow of the London Institute in 1998. He has taught at a number of leading institutions including the London Business School and the RCA in London, and Stanford University in the United States. In 1988 he was elected as a Royal Designer for Industry and IDEO received the Design Group of the Year Award from the Design Zentrum in Essen in 1996, one of numerous accolades since the consultancy's inception.
