Europe

The Greek goddesses of Fate. Their genealogy is confused and reflects their change from chthonic deities associated with death to the controllers of human destiny, those who decide what must befall the individual. There were usually three Moirai: Klotho, ‘the spinner’; Lachesis, ‘the apportioner’; and Atropos ‘the inevitable’. A late idea was that the Fates span a length of yarn which represented the alloted span for a mortal.
