(b Odessa, 1890; d London, 1963). Russ.-born pianist (Brit. cit. 1937). First appeared in Eng. at Reading, 1908, London 1909. Continental tours, then settled in Eng. 1914. Expert in classical repertory but noted above all for his playing of mus. of Rachmaninov, regarded as surpassed in its day only by composer himself. CBE 1946.
