The application of the techniques and methods of molecular biology in epidemiological practice and research. For instance, DNA typing is used to track the movement of specific strains of pathogenic agents through a population. Molecular epidemiology has proved a useful method for studying the pathogenesis of neoplasia and mutagenesis.
