The short introductory narrative passages prefixed in many MSS of the Vulgate to each of the Gospels. They were formerly held to be of 2nd–3rd-cent. date and from Monarchian sources: hence the name. Most recent critics hold that they were Priscillianist in inspiration and date from the late 4th or early 5th century.
