A novel by Sir W. Scott, published 1820. Set in the Abbey of Melrose (renamed Kennaquhair) in the Scotland of the early Reformation, it gives a vivid picture of the decline of the unreformed Catholic Church, but was the first of Scott's novels to be considered a failure.
