A term applied to several work-related conditions in which return to the workplace after a short interval away is associated with recurrence of symptoms. Examples include the recrudescence of respiratory symptoms of byssinosis on re-exposure to cotton dust and of severe headache on renewed occupational exposure to nitroglycerine. The term is also used to describe an alcohol-induced hangover following a weekend of heavy drinking.
