A genus of fungi first introduced in the 18th century that originally included fungi isolated from vegetation and subsequently yeasts recovered from cases of oral and vaginal thrush. Several yeast species recovered from humans including Candida albicans were originally classified within the genus Monilia but are now classified within the genus Candida.
