The flowers may be solitary or in inflorescences, often unisexual, with variable numbers of overlapping perianth segments. The fruit is a dry achene. The family includes species used to produce aromatic oils, perfumes, medicines, and dyes. Some species are used locally for timber or edible fruits. There are 35 genera and about 450 species, occurring in warm and tropical climates.
