Quick Reference

A pupil who is given special responsibility for a classroom or playground task, usually as a reward for good or responsible behaviour. For example, a pupil given the job of cleaning the board for the teacher would be known as the ‘board monitor’. In the days of school milk, a much‐sought‐after role among pupils was that of ‘milk monitor’, which involved the dispensing of milk to the rest of the class. The term is regarded now as somewhat old‐fashioned, and has largely fallen out of use in state schools.
