Irish poet. His volumes of poetry include Forms of Exile (1958), Poisoned Lands (1961), Tides (1970), The Great Cloak (1978), Selected Poems (1982), and Collected Poems (1995). Many of his short, intense lyrics evoke the landscapes and heritage of rural Ireland, in a fine, spare diction. He has also edited various anthologies of Irish literature, and published short stories and a play.
