American football star, considered one of the greatest ever quarterbacks.
Pennsylvania-born Montana graduated from Notre Dame (1978) and began to play for the San Francisco 49ers in 1979, leading them to four Super Bowl victories. He was voted Super Bowl Most Valuable Player in 1982, 1985, and 1990 and the National Football League (NFL) Most Valuable Player in 1989. Montana finished his professional playing career with the Kansas City Chiefs (1993–95). The NFL rating system ranks Montana as the most successful quarterback in its history for his 63.67 percentage of passes completed. A more colourful tribute came from Cincinnati receiver Chris Collingsworth after defeat at the hands of the 49ers at the 1989 Super Bowl: ‘Joe Montana is not human. I don't want to call him a God, but he's definitely somewhere in between.’
