Quick Reference

Popular nickname of Beethoven's Pf. Sonata No.14 in C♯ minor, Op.27 No.2, comp. 1800–1. The nickname originated in review by poet Heinrich Rellstab (1799–1860) in which he wrote that the first movement reminded him of moonlight on Lake Lucerne—a misleading approach to a movement with almost the character of a funeral march.
