Amer. composer. Dir., West Coast Mus. Ens., S. Francisco. Comp.‐in‐res. Portland State Univ. 1972–4 and Northwestern Univ. 1977–8. Moved to NY 1978 and Philadelphia 1985. Among his works, using aleatory techniques, are L'après‐midi du Dracoula, for any group of instrs. (1966); Smell Piece for Mills College, for frying pans and foods (1967, ‘orig. intended to produce a conflagration sufficiently thermal to burn down the college’). Operas incl. The Juniper Tree (1985, in collab. with Glass). His Hitler: Geschichten aus der Zukunft (1981) was banned in Ger. Later operas incl. Desert of Roses (1989–90, f.p. Houston 1992); From the Towers of the Moon (1990); The Dracula Diary (1994); Remember Me to Him (1996).
