An acid or acid mixture used for the biting process in etching, that is the eating into the image-bearing surface of the artist's design. The mordants most commonly used in printing from metal plates are dilute solutions of nitric acid or hydrochloric acid. Hydrofluoric acid is normally employed for etching on glass.
