Appointed Iranian prime minister by Muhammad Reza Shah in 1951. Promoted nationalization of the oil industry to grant Iran independence from Western control. Ousted in 1953 by the shah's supporters aided by the CIA. The overthrow planted seeds of hostility between the Iranian people and the United States, which later exploded during the Islamic revolution.
