A technique that combines psychiatric assessment with elements of problem-solving psychotherapy. It is mostly used with patients who have substance abuse problems. The interviewer elicits the psychiatric history and the extent of the patient’s difficulties, gives educational information, and tries to motivate the patient to change his or her habits.
