South African dancer. She studied with Schwezoff in London, Preobrajenska and Egorova in Paris, and at the School of American Ballet in New York. She joined Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo in 1939 and later danced with de Basil's Original Ballet Russe (1940–1). She also had a company of her own in South Africa in the late 1940s. She joined New York City Ballet in 1949 where she created roles in Robbins's The Cage (1951) and The Concert (1956), Ashton's Picnic at Tintagel (1952), and Balanchine's Nutcracker (1954). In 1958 she returned to South Africa to help launch the Johannesburg City Ballet. In the 1960s she settled in Los Angeles, founding her own school.
