A milk-borne retrovirus that causes mammary cancer in mice of appropriate genotype. The infectious virus is produced by infected epithelial cells of the mammary gland. The virus can also be inherited genetically in the form of an endogenous provirus (q.v.) in the germ line. See Chronology, 1936, Bittner; proto-oncogene, retrovirus.
