Quick Reference

The name originally given to areas on the Sun that were assumed to cause geomagnetic disturbances not associated with observed active regions; ‘M’ stands for magnetically effective. Data from the Skylab space station in the early 1970s revealed that M regions are actually coronal holes at low solar latitudes.
