German installation artist, born in Düsseldorf, where he lives and works. He makes use of bits of furnishings and other objects, usually from around the site of the exhibition itself. These are both site-specific and impermanent. What is disconcerting is that it is not always obvious that the work is an art exhibition at all. Calor (1986) was an assembly of ladders and scaffolding at the Pompidou Centre, Paris, which could almost have been the preparation for an exhibition. Only the fact that the ladders jutted out at an irrational angle gave it away as ‘art’.
