Inflammation of the mucosa (mucous membrane). It is seen as a side-effect of chemotherapy or radiotherapy of the head and neck and is characterized by a burning sensation, areas of redness, and sometimes ulceration. Chronic senile mucositis is characterized by mucosal atrophy and is seen primarily in elderly women.
