Son of Nation of Islam founder Elijah Muhammad. Named leader of Nation of Islam after his father's death (1975); gradually reinterpreted Nation of Islam teachings concerning race, divinity, and prophecy, and revised the group's structure, moving it in the direction of orthodox Sunni Islam. Opened the movement to Muslims of all ethnicities. Restored use of the traditional Muslim declaration of faith (shahadah).
