The first female Japanese astronaut in space, and the first Japanese to fly twice. A physician, she was a payload specialist on the Columbia space shuttle 8–23 June 1994, on which medical and microgravity experiments were conducted. She also flew on the Discovery flight in 29 October–7 November 1998, which included investigations on space flight and the ageing process.
