Libyan resistance leader. Unified the authority of the Sanusi Sufi order in Cyrenaica. Combining religious authority with military skill, inspired tribes to join the jihad against Italian occupation (1911–17). Was captured, tried, and hanged. Resistance crumbled after his death.
