Quick Reference

The remote sky god of the Herero people of South-West Africa. Mukuru ‘is all alone’, without parents or companions. He is a benevolent deity, showing his kindness through life-giving rain, healing the sick, and upholding the very old. Even death is taken as a benign act—the calling home of god's creatures. Since Mukuru ‘does only good’, the Herero say, ‘we do not make offerings to him.’ The implication is that they are unnecessary, the trappings of a priestly cult.
