(1928–73), Italian photographer who worked in Milan from the mid-1950s as a stage photographer for the theatre director Giorgio Streheler, and freelance in fashion and industrial photography. He made many artist portraits, both in Italy, where he was official photographer at the Venice Biennale 1954–68, and in the USA, where he made sensitive images of Duchamp, Newman, Rauschenberg, Warhol, and others. In the 1970s he undertook an important series, Verifiche (1970–3), exploring the nature of the photographic medium, its materials and processes, in a work that spanned modernist self-referentiality and the rigour of Conceptual art.
