Quick Reference

A long-baseline interferometer operated by Jodrell Bank Observatory consisting of seven radio telescopes distributed across England. It first came into operation in 1980. The telescopes are at Jodrell Bank in Cheshire (76-m Lovell Telescope and 25 × 38-m Mark II); Tabley (25-m dish) and Darnhall (25-m dish) both in Cheshire; Knockin (25-m dish) in Shropshire; Defford (25-m dish) in Worcestershire; and Cambridge (32-m dish), added in 1990. The longest baseline is 217 km. An upgraded version of the array called e-MERLIN, with over ten times the sensitivity of the original system, came into operation in 2010.
