Quick Reference

(MLI)

Thin layers of polyester or polyamide, used to provide thermal insulation for spacecraft. MLI protects the vehicle from overheating by reflecting sunlight, but it retains enough heat inside. These layers have been coated with a thin film of aluminium or gold. To minimize the conductance between layers, they are often separated by such materials as glass-fibre paper, foam, or plastic and silk netting.
