Symbol k. The ratio of the average number of neutrons produced in a nuclear reactor per unit time to the number of neutrons lost by absorption or leakage in the same time. If k = 1, the reactor is said to be critical. If k > 1 it is supercritical and if k < 1 it is subcritical. See also critical reaction.
