The notion that intrinsic motivation and extrinsic motivation are interactive and not additive. The principle is based on the observation that, in some circumstances extrinsic motivation in the form of awards and trophies enhances achievement motivation, but in other circumstances extrinsic motivation may diminish achievement motivation.
