Quick Reference

Apostate; one who has renounced her or his religion. According to classical Islamic law, a murtadd is subject to the death penalty or banishment. Legal opinions vary regarding the status of an apostate's property but agree that an apostate's marriage is void and that he or she loses the right to a Muslim burial. Many modern thinkers reject the death penalty for apostasy, stressing instead the Quran's prohibition of coercion in matters of religion (2:257).
