Quick Reference

A gland, usually an anal gland, present in many animals, that secretes musk, a substance with a penetrating odour. Different species produce musks of varying composition. Originally, musk was obtained from the glands of musk-deer (Moschidae), located between the stomach and genitals (‘musk’ is from Sanskrit muská meaning ‘testicle’).
