Quick Reference

The Muslim Youth Movement of South Africa (MYMSA) was established in 1970 as a religious and cultural organization catering to the needs of young Muslims during the apartheid era. MYMSA at first drew inspiration from revivalist groups such as the Muslim Brotherhood of Egypt and the Jamaat-i Islami of Pakistan. Over time it developed an indigenous focus, changed its agenda to deal with issues of racial discrimination and gender justice, and adopted a more contextual approach to Islam. In the postapartheid period it has become representative of the diverse ethnic groups in the country.
